So the RESILIO project used software from Autodesk to model the impact of blue-green roofs and the risk of flooding in Amsterdam, also adjusting for climate change. The Milan showcase highlights the fruits of this labour and features 16 pieces of furniture and homeware alongside their flat-packed counterparts, including a chair, several tables and stools, plus smaller pieces such as a wine rack. First developed in the 1940s, the material is commonly used to make household, makeup and medical sponges, although its use in furniture is "virtually unheard of" according to Guberan. Out of the many materials considered – including cork, latex and luffa – cellulose sponge crystallised itself as both "the most surprising and most promising", according to the researchers. On arrival, the grow-at-home products must then be drenched in the bath or the shower, causing them to blow up to around 10 times their original size in a matter of seconds.

“Cellulose is a part of nature so, like a tree, it can be flexible and strong at the same time,” said ÉCAL researcher and industrial designer Christophe Guberan. The sponge is extracted from wood offcuts, and it is equipped with strength due to the same cellulose fibers that is utilized by a tree to reinforce its trunk and branches. The hair sponge brush usually comes with a flat side and on with grooves. Use the flat side to create very defined curls, or use the side with grooves to achieve a more rugged look.

Ultimately, it’s made design more accessible and broadened the conversations we’re having, as well as whose voices get to be heard—and for that, I am eternally grateful. We need more meaningful and substantive diversity in our community and I’m seeing that happen on social media more than in print and even on blogs. How long have you known that this was the direction things were heading, and when did you make the final decision?

I’ve known for a long time that we’d all move on to new chapters in the not-so-distant future. It’s something I’ve talked about more concretely for the past year, and it wasn’t until I read Tavi Gevinson’s closing letter at Rookie that I started imagining what our closing could and should look like. Once I imagined telling people and enjoying that last year openly, it all fell into place and we made the decision with our team over the course of about two and a half weeks. Over 100 exceptional and influential women describe how they embraced their creative spirit, overcame adversity, and sparked a global movement of entrepreneurship. Media titans and ceramicists, hoteliers and tattoo artists, comedians and architects—taken together, these profiles paint a beautiful picture of what happens when we pursue our passions and dreams.

Grace has weathered all of these, plus big personal changes, too. Calling it "the Goldilocks of beauty blenders," one of our testers said this soft and bouncy sponge by L'Oréal plays well with water but isn't too absorbent so it won't soak up all your product. I’m curious to know how you feel it has changed the conversation about design, and where things are headed.Oh, it’s dramatically changed so many things, for better and worse.

The sponge is derived from wood offcuts and gains its strength from the very same cellulose fibres that a tree uses to reinforce its trunk and branches. By adding small amounts of water, the various furniture pieces can become flexible once again, and they can be repaired by smoothing out any dents. And once the lifecycle of the furniture has been completed, it can be recycled or composted in the backyard.
At Milan Design Week, we got to witness a range of intriguing flat-pack furniture by researchers from the Swiss design school ÉCAL. The interesting collection needs to be immersed in water to reach its final finished form. Dubbed Under Pressure Solutions or UPS, the furniture is crafted from thin and compressed sheets of cellulose sponge, which enables the products to be packed into flat parcels.

In fact, every well-designed website should have one or more focal points to add interest to it. Depending on the size of the site you are working with, a great example of some focal points would be a sitewide banner, a striking logo, or well-designed menu bars. When undertaking web design, there are important aspects of interior design that you can take inspiration from to help you build a fantastic website that works as well as it looks. Think of your website as the building and the pages as the rooms, you need to look at the website as a whole.

Even if you are a novice, The Blog Starter has shown that it’s still relatively easy to learn how to start a blog that looks beautiful and incorporates these seemingly more advanced features. The accessories you add to your home all work together to help enhance the look and feel of the space and can be a quick and easy way to change the atmosphere of the room and this is the same for your web pages. By adding some personality to your website by using hand-drawn sketches, art, and well thought out design pieces, you create a site that is less sterile and more friendly. A focal point should aim to draw the eye to it by creating interest, but should not dominate the eye line, this is why in interior design feature walls work so well.
A major challenge with sponge cities, though, is that so much of an urban area is rooftops, which are obviously impervious by design. Researchers from Swiss design school ÉCAL have unveiled a range of flat-pack furniture at Milan design week that needs to be soaked in water to reach its final form. Whether you apply a full face of makeup daily or just on special occasions, you'll want the right tools in your arsenal. In addition to a few good brushes, no modern makeup kit is complete without a couple of sponges.
Whereas cities used to be designed to wick rainwater away as quickly as possible, increasingly they’re exploiting that resource instead of fighting it. Rebecca Norris is a contributing writer at InStyle, covering beauty and celebrity news. In order to write this article, she dove deep into the insights provided by the testers and compiled them into a comprehensive and digestible list. She then spoke with beauty expert Rose Siard to get further insight on how to properly shop for and use makeup sponges.
To make the sponge, cellulose was extracted from wood offcuts, chemically dissolved and ultimately regenerated in the form of sheets using the same process developed to make viscose and other cellulose textiles. We’re an online magazine dedicated to covering the best in international product design. We have a passion for the new, innovative, unique and undiscovered. Just like with a home, if you don’t take care of it and update and repair it throughout the year, it soon starts to become dated and falling apart. In fact, renovating and updating your website on a regular basis allows you to keep your customers happy by providing fresh and new content, fully functional links and pages, and as bug-free as possible. The use of contrast, especially with color can liven up a website and give it a modern sleek feel.
Since makeup sponges are designed to absorb water, they can sometimes absorb a bunch of foundation (or whatever makeup you're using with them), too. For starters, former InStyle Beauty Editor, Dianna Mazzone, says to always dry clean your makeup sponge after each use. This means rubbing any excess product off onto a washcloth or paper towel.

Plus occasional updates on Dezeen’s services and breaking news. Although ÉCAL's prototypes are not yet ready for industrial production, Guberan says they can provide a roadmap for how to make furniture delivery more sustainable.
"You can decide the shape you want for the shelf and when it's dry, it will stay like that," Guberan said. "And if you move somewhere else where you have another setup, you can re-wet it and remould it." The aim was to keep interventions as minimal as possible to explore the possibilities of the material and allow its natural expansion to dictate the shape. The resulting material is generally sold in the form of standardised sheets that are compressed and dehydrated for easy transport.
Beauty sponges are super versatile—they work with liquids, creams, and powders for everything from application and contouring to blending and setting. Beyond the classic pointed egg, they come in all shapes, sizes, densities, and textures. To help you narrow it down, we researched today's best-sellers and tested dozens in our NYC Lab.
